When Tanya first entered the workforce 15 years ago, she never thought she’d end up in the meat packing industry. When the opportunity to work for Thrifty Kitchens arose four years ago though, she jumped at the chance. Tanya knew Thrifty Foods had an outstanding reputation as a great place to work, and she wanted to learn something new. At first she worked in the bakery, helping to prepare pies, cut squares, and pack product. Since 2008, Tanya has been a member of the Meat Module team. The Meat Module prepares products such as Maui ribs, chicken cordon bleu, and sausages. While working in the Meat Module, Tanya completes various tasks from breading chicken to packing sausages to taking the temperature of each room of the module. “What I love about this place,” Tanya explains, “is there’s always something new to learn and do.” Thang Vu, Meat Module Manager at Thrifty Kitchens relates, “I want everyone on my team to be leaders. Taking initiative and constantly striving to do better is what we are all about.” Tanya is proud to be part of the Meat Module team and she is looking forward to meeting new challenges for a long time to come.
Kris in his own words My name is Kris and I have been with Garth Homer Society since 2002. I am part of Employment Services and in August of 2006 I got my first paid job. I work at BC Non-Profit Catering Trust in the cafeteria as a dishwasher and general helper. My job coach from Garth Homer helped me learn my job there. I wash dishes, help bring in deliveries from the loading dock, wash tables, take out the garbage and help my boss Rebecca with anything she needs me to do. I really like my work and I do a good job because they need my help. I was bored sometimes before I got this job and I like working and earning a pay cheque much better. What Kris’s boss has to say We think Kris is great. He works hard and brings a great attitude to work. We’ve appreciated the support from his job coach and any issues have been resolved immediately.
