Terra's Story

Everyone at the Camosun College bookstore appreciates Terra and her joyful attitude, especially when she tells stories about her beloved Canucks Hockey Team. Terra is an integral part of our community thanks to GHS's Employment Services.

At one time Terra had spent time volunteering to wash toys at a community centre, but most recently she had just been spending time hanging out at her home. When Terra decided that she wanted to transition into paid employment she came to GHS's Employment Services. She was assigned a job coach who assessed her strengths and abilities and helped her decide what kind of workplace she would like to join.

Her job coach then began talking to prospective employers about possible jobs for Terra and her special abilities. Within a month Terra competed with other candidates for a position at Camosun bookstore and she was successful. Since April 24, 2006 she has been working at the Camosun bookstore as general merchandise stocker and has built up a great relationship with her co-workers. “I love it here and I do not want to be anywhere else than here. Two thumbs up.” (Jan 2010)

Terra is appreciated for her cheerful, diligent and hard working disposition. While her main activity is to stock drinks in coolers, she has helped around the store with folding and shelving clothes and other bookstore items. Her job refilling coolers has played a significant role in selling drinks within the bookstore. For example, on one of the busiest days, the bookstore sold almost 400 bottles of vitamin water.

Terra’s supervisor says:

“Terra’s strengths are many. She always brings a positive attitude each and every day. Terra performs all of her duties with speed and accuracy and adapts very well to change. She is often asked questions by customers and is able to answer them or find them the help they require. She is a valuable member of the Bookstore team and her friendly manner and great sense of humour are greatly appreciated. Terra is always eager and willing to take on new tasks and will take initiative to find tasks outside of her regular duties whenever time allows.”
