THE MISSION OF THE GARTH HOMER SOCIETY IS TO CREATE OPPORTUNITIES FOR INDEPENDENCE, GROWTH AND PARTICIPATION IN THE COMMUNITY WITH PEOPLE WHO STRIVE TO OVERCOME DEVELOPMENTAL AND PHYSICAL OBSTACLES.

Building Fund

$85,000 per year (includes the need to budget to replace the roof, stucco, windows and toilets within the next three years)

Let me tell you a little bit about affable Alvin, a client in his 70’s. What Alvin most enjoys about his almost daily visits to the Garth Homer Society is art, music and visiting with his good friend, Bill. He belongs. Time spent inside the Garth Homer Society building is time for activities, socialization, and positive interactions... he is happy.

We have enjoyed being part of Alvin’s life since 1988, only 11 years after we opened the Garth Homer Society building. Before that time, Alvin was in a sheltered workshop and spent long days taking labels off boxes and covers off chairs. Those days are gone.  Alvin and hundreds of clients since then experience enriched lives within the walls of this building.

The problem is, the building is aging and needs immediate replacement of the roof in 2010 and gradual replacement of the windows, toilets and sidewalks over the next three years. Every delay increases the cost of replacement and adds to our ongoing costs to run the facility. For example, the current toilets are not efficient like the new models so they are adding $3,500 annually to our water bill.

The Building Fund is seeking one-time donations as well as monthly or yearly pledges toward keeping the building in good shape, and keeping the opportunity for people like Alvin to enjoy his days with us. “I like to feel warm and comfortable inside” says Alvin.

You can donate to sponsor the installation and repair of the following. Immediate donations will save us the cost of short term repair and maintenance.

  • Roof $90,000
  • Stucco $75,000
  • 55 Windows at $1,145 each totals $63,000
  • 24 Low Flush Toilets $13,000
  • Sidewalks $10,000

Thanks to generous donors, our facility will continue to be the cornerstone of feelings of belonging, joy and purpose for clients of the Garth Homer Society. We are grateful for one-time donations and monthly support or sponsorships.  Donate to the Building Fund today by phone at 250-475-2270, by mail using this form, or online through CanadaHelps.
