Community Access FAQ
I'm interested in having CAT members volunteer in my organization. What's involved and how do I apply? Generally 3 clients will participate in volunteering at a community site supported at all times by one staff member. You can contact us with volunteering opportunities and we will then match the abilties and interests of the individuals that we support with your requests. You can get more specific information by contacting the Program Coordinator. What are the criteria for clients to participate in the CAT program? People who attend CAT: - want to contribute to community by volunteering
- want to be part of a team
- participate in group activities semi-independently
- demonstrate a willingness to participate in a fast-paced community-based program
- have goals, strengths and abilities that match the program's mission
- are independent in self care
- require minimal support with travel/mobility in community-based settings
Why are you raising money for Africa when it seems the Garth Homer Society also needs money? We believe that everyone needs and has a right to give to others. It is part of being human, and it contributes to one’s self-esteem, sense of purpose and one’s standing in the community. Garth Homer Society clients are no exception, and GHS strives to provide clients with opportunities to help others. CAT clients grasp these opportunities with great enthusiasm and joy, and their confidence and independence grows as a result. Many of the people in Africa to whom CAT clients give the funds they work hard to raise have developmental and/or physical disabilities. Our clients have come to understand that these people face the same challenges they do plus many others such as severe poverty and a lack of the most basic resources. This has helped them appreciate their world and to demonstrate empathy and respect for the courage of others. It has also meant that they are able to give rather than receive – a wonderful feeling we all deserve to experience and an opportunity for growth. In looking beyond their own needs CAT clients trust that those needs will be met with the help of the Victoria community, and that the same generosity of spirit that allows them to benefit others in Africa, will in turn be shown to them.
