Community Exploration
One of the STARR program’s most important recreational pursuits is exploring our community. This is important for clients as it helps them learn about their community and step outside their comfort zone in a safe and supportive way. For example once a year we attend the Luxton Fair where clients enjoy a hotdog lunch sponsored by Kiwanis. It would be almost impossible for STARR clients to enjoy all the noise and excitement of the fair without the security of the emotional and physical support of the staff. STARR takes every opportunity it can to take clients out exploring. It might be taking part in Tourist in Your Own Home Town which exposes them to a diverse range of experiences such as riding a double-decker bus or visiting the Observatory. Or it could be taking a hayride to the pumpkin patch at Galey's Farm, a boisterous and physically challenging time for clients. These outings all combine new experiences with social activity which would be difficult for our clients without staff support. Whenever we come back from one of our explorations we see clients filled with confidence and pride at overcoming their fears and having a good time.
