THE MISSION OF THE GARTH HOMER SOCIETY IS TO CREATE OPPORTUNITIES FOR INDEPENDENCE, GROWTH AND PARTICIPATION IN THE COMMUNITY WITH PEOPLE WHO STRIVE TO OVERCOME DEVELOPMENTAL AND PHYSICAL OBSTACLES.

Volunteering at GHS

Volunteering with the Garth Homer Society is a fun and rewarding challenge for those who wish to give back to people who ask for so little. Whatever your interest, there is most likely someone here who not only shares it with you, but would love to have an extra hand to help them along.

Some of our volunteers have been here for more than ten years, tirelessly donating their time to people who truly need and deserve it. Some activities they assist with include therapeutic dog walking, sing-alongs in the community, and helping in the Computer Resource Centre.

Our requirements for potential volunteers are that you are at least 18 years of age, commit to at least six months of volunteering with us, provide three references, and acquire a criminal record check from your local police department before you start with us. Of course, we love all of our volunteers to bring energy, creativity, and a sense of humour! Experience in the field is an asset but definitely not required, as a number of our volunteers are from very diverse backgrounds bringing unique points of view and experiences.

Selecting and training volunteers involves a fair amount of administrative and staff time so we are careful to find and match the right volunteer to the right position.  For that reason we don't have an open call for volunteers but do post positions on the Volunteer Victoria website when we are looking for someone in particular.
