DREAMS Recreation
Recreational activities are extremely important for clients in DREAMS. They contribute to both their physical and mental health. Mobility can be an area of concern for clients in DREAMS, so providing recreational activities in their weekly schedule can assist in keeping them as mobile as possible and as physically healthy as possible. The range of recreational activities in which DREAM clients participate is quite broad and varies depending on the time of year: swimming at the Commonwealth and Gordon Head Recreation Centers, riding at the Victoria Riding For the Disabled, sailing with Recreation Integration, and paddle boating at Elk Lake just to name a few. One of our clients has recently started an exercise program at Saanich Commonwealth Place. With the assistance of a trainer she has begun a series of simple exercises geared to increasing her upper body strength and improving her posture. As a result of her better mobility, she now uses her walker instead of a wheelchair. Another client has been participating in therapy riding at the Victoria Riding for the Disabled Association for about ten years and now has secured a life-time spot. She looks forward to her riding session each week and has become more vocal and independent once we arrive at the property. The riding sessions include a variety of activities that involve hand and eye coordination, balance, following instructions while on the horse, trail riding and social skills. The client has also learned patience while waiting for the horses to be saddled.
