THE MISSION OF THE GARTH HOMER SOCIETY IS TO CREATE OPPORTUNITIES FOR INDEPENDENCE, GROWTH AND PARTICIPATION IN THE COMMUNITY WITH PEOPLE WHO STRIVE TO OVERCOME DEVELOPMENTAL AND PHYSICAL OBSTACLES.

ArtWorks

ArtWorks is a unique visual arts program that serves adults with developmental disabilities in the Greater Victoria area. Founded in 1998 by Artists/Coordinators, Bonnie Laird and Suzanne Bessette, ArtWorks has been particularly successful in mentoring clients to develop their artistic talents and to showcase their work in the community. An increasing number of people within our community are appreciating our artists and their work. Kate Cino, Art Writer, Boulevard Magazine says, “Social skills, self esteem and community involvement result from this specialized program which is lauded as a leader in it’s field in BC and across Canada”. Robert Amos, Times Colonist, art critic reports, “A quiet hum of creative concentration pervades the ArtWorks studio space. It is clear from the start that these are people with artistic ability who are committed to making art”.

The newly designed ArtWorks Karin Koerner Gallery and Jennie Butchart Studio provides artists with the opportunity to create, exhibit and sell their art in a stimulating environment where they can be as independent as possible. Artist Ashley Haagensen says, “In the new gallery it is a lot easier to move around, there is space to breathe! I have access to the sink and art supplies. It makes me feel like WOW! To see my work hanging in our new gallery”

Located near Swan Lake in Saanich, we assist adults of all ages who want to develop their creative style and realize their dreams of becoming professional artists. We provide professional visual art instruction in a supported studio environment. You can explore your own unique style and develop your techniques in the ArtWorks studio. You will have the opportunity to exhibit in solo and group exhibitions at local, national and international galleries. Artists work in group settings where friendships form and ideas are shared through art discussions, visits to galleries and collaborations with community groups and professional artists.
