CBC RADIO INTERVIEW featuring GHS client Ron Macketuk:
November 9, 2009

To most of us a door is a point of access, or entry. But to people with disabilities it can be a barrier. Just ask Ron Macketuck. He relies on a motorized wheelchair to get around Victoria, and often finds shop doors are too difficult to open himself.

That was certainly the case at the Starbucks in Cook Street Village, where Ron likes to go for the coffee on weekends. But two years ago, Ron started prodding the staff and customers at Starbucks … convincing people that an automatic wheelchair-accessible door was needed.

And sure enough, two weeks ago, Starbucks put one in place. CBC Radio's On The Island’s Gregor Craigie sat down for a coffee with Ron Macketuck and his Garth Homer Society key worker Marleen Luinstra … inside the Starbucks.
